With 3D printing, the nozzle diameter determines the smallest positive feature produced while in CNC machining, the tool diameter dictates the smallest negative element that can be created. For instance, the nozzle diameters of a typical 3D printer are around 0.25mm to 0.8mm capable of producing minimum features four times between 1.0mm to 3.2mm.

The finish of the final product also matters. CNC machines are capable of producing pinpoint precision and much smoother surfaces than 3DP.

Both methods can deal with a wide range of materials, including metals and plastics. Previously 3D printing focused majorly on plastics, but we have seen changes from companies such as 3D Systems, Desktop Metal, and Arcam coming up with efficient metal 3D printers. Nevertheless, CNC machining is incomparable with high-density metals or wood.
