How Process Mapping Helps Our Company Better Serve Customers

process mapping

Process mapping is a method used to meticulously document every step in the precision machining process, from the initial customer interaction to the release of the finished product. The process map is a living, breathing document that evolves with the precision machine shop.

At Ricaurte Precision, we use our process map to identify and overcome inefficiencies in our precision machining company’s operations. With a thorough overview of our process, we can better define roles and responsibilities on our team, establish measurable metrics of success, and continuously improve our operations.

Recently, RPI rededicated ourselves to process mapping and completed a rigorous update of our process map to incorporate new automated and digital technologies.

The Benefits of Process Mapping at RPI

We spent five months carefully updating and improving our process map. Team leaders edited and elaborated on their processes to reflect our current order of operations.

Thanks to our efforts, our new process map helps us continue to:

  • Identify bottlenecks and areas to improve
  • Clarify and document unwritten rules
  • Address specific customer needs

Process mapping also empowers the RPI team to begin realizing the full potential of our technology, highlighting how we can optimize our machine capabilities and where we can invest in technology to streamline operations.

Optimizing our digital technology

The process map confirmed that despite early concerns, our recent investments in 5-axis machining and automated pallet systems streamlined our precision machining process. Our automation capabilities expedite project scaling and enable lights-out machining and just-in-time manufacturing.

Our ERP system, ProShop, serves as the backbone of our operations. With the full participation of every department and the robust transparency it offers, it has made every job traceable, significantly boosting efficiency.

Automation remains the primary focus of our facility improvements. Our process map outlines the benefits of extensive automation, and we are prioritizing investments in new pallet systems and computer management systems.

Our eye is always on what’s coming down the road as we anticipate how technology will advance the precision machining industry.

The next phase of our process map

As our shop rapidly increases our 5-axis machining and automated machining capabilities, we envision a process map where many tasks are completely automated, increasing productivity and reducing the risk of human error.

The next evolution of our process map will allow RPI’s experienced team to focus on further expanding our capabilities and serving our customers better than ever before.

RPI Moves Toward High-Volume and NPI Projects

At RPI, embracing new technology and a culture of continuous improvement is woven into the fabric of our company. With our highly skilled workers and efficient technology use, we anticipate taking on more high-volume work and New Product Introductions in the near future.

With our process map as a guiding light, we will continue to optimize our precision machine shop and its technology to best serve our customers.
